Know What Animal Testing Entails

"Whenever an animal is in anyway forced into the service of man, everyone of us must be concerned with the sufferings it has to undergo." ~ Albert Schweitzer, Alsatian Theologian, Musician, and Medical Missionary
"I believe I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't. To know that the results are profitable to the race would not remove my hostility to it. The pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further."
Mark Twain, American Novelist and Humorist
"It is totally unconscionable to subject defenseless animals to mutilation and death, just so a company can be the first to market a new shade of nail polish or a new, improved laundry detergent. It's cruel, it's brutal, it's inhumane, and most people don't want it."
Abigail Van Buren, Newspaper Columnist

(Testimony, House Judiciary Committee, supporting Consumer Products Safe Testing Act, 3/88)
"All the arguments to prove man's superiority cannot shatter this hard fact:
In suffering, the animals are our equals."

Peter Singer, from Animal Liberation

The Tragedy of 'Free To Good Home'
NOTICE: Animal abusers have long been known to acquire their animal victims through "Free to Good Home" ads. Never place such an ad in the paper or on public display in any manner when seeking a home for an animal in your care. Just one example of what can happen to "Free to Good Home" ads can be found here.

In additon, unscrupulous individuals known as "bunchers" often respond to these ads looking for dogs and cats they plan to sell to labs for medical research and experimentation. Unless you can personally vouch for anyone wanting the animal, always require a person to fill out an adoption application, and also that they pay an adoption fee for the animal. This will help to weed out bunchers.

What flashes across your mind when you hear "Laboratory Research Animals", "Animal Testing" or "Vivisection" - mice, rats, rabbits, primates, birds, cats, dogs... OR your family pet?

Because laboratories are permitted the use of domesticated animals in testing, thousands of our beloved pets are stolen from us annually and sold on the black market to laboratories nationwide. Others are purchased directly from puppy/pet/animal mills, where they are bred and sold specifically for experimentation. And then there are those whose points of origin will never be known.

Maybe you invision all animal research being as noble as helping to find the cure for cancer or AIDS. (Read the medical advances made WITHOUT animal testing). However, every year millions of animals suffer and die in painful tests to determine the "safety" of our cosmetics and household products.

Consider the spraying of oven cleaner in an animal's eyes (eye irritancy test) to document the resulting damage ... or the pouring or injecting of a caustic chemical directly into his throat (lethal dose test) to gauge the length of time it takes the animal to die using a prescribed amount of substance. Routinely there is no anesthesia administered. If the creature is lucky, death comes quickly; but, before that blessed release, the animal will experience pain and suffering few of us can bear to imagine.

Are these examples extreme? More importantly, are they necessary? You must decide for yourself if this corporate practice is acceptable. Can we continue to condone what these animals endure ... to allow their lives to be snuffed out, and in such a cruel manner; suffering unmercifully at the hands of, and more pitiably, in the name of ... humankind?

In Defense of Animals offers additional facts here.

Read about the Corporate Standard of Compassion for Animals regarding animal testing for household products and cosmetics. There ARE alternatives!

Proctor & Gamble issued a statement dated July 1, 1999, which includes their supposed committment now to end animal testing: "Procter & Gamble is committed to the ultimate elimination of all animal testing. We believe the development of alternatives to animal testing makes good scientific, ethical and business sense. We have invested nearly $100 million in the development of alternatives that are helping reduce, refine and replace the need for animal tests."

While the company claims that it has reduced the number of animals, it refuses to back up any of its claims with facts. For example, Procter & Gamble refuses to release to the public information regarding the actual numbers and species of animals used, or the types of tests it forces these animals to endure.

Corporations listen to one thing: Their quarterly reports; the bottom line: PROFIT. Below is a listing of their products. Do we want to support the use of animals in their product testing?
