Bounding to the window-sill
Over which I vaguely see
Your small mound beneath the tree..."

Dumpster Kittens and Pumpkin ~ Jana Faucher of Action Cat
Dumpster Kittens ~ Born 1997 Became AngelKitties 1997
Small service is true service while it lasts.
Of humblest friends, bright creature! scorn not one:
The daisy, by the shadow that it casts,
Protects the lingering dewdrop from the sun.
~ William Wordsworth ~
Their eyes were barely open and they were no bigger than a mouse. One was black and white, one was calico, one was white, and the other was ginger. Someone left them in a cardboard box in the dumpster behind my service apartment, and someone else moved them to an area with a little more shelter and put a dish of milk in the box, but they were too young to drink milk from a dish. No one called the SPCA. By the time someone told me about them, it was too late to do anything but take them to the SPCA and put an end to their suffering.
Pumpkin ~ Born ??? Became an AngelKitty October 18, 1997
Know'st thou the land where the lemon-trees bloom,
Where the gold orange glows in the deep thicket's gloom,
Where a wind ever soft from the blue heaven blows,
And the groves are of laurel and myrtle and rose!
~ Goethe ~
I never saw Pumpkin. He was one of the sad little cats that Clarice found - beaten and scalded with a boiling liquid by one of Singapore's hawkers. She asked me to foster him when he came out of the hospital. I named him Pumpkin because he was orange and it was near Halloween. I made plans to buy tuna and salmon and a soft cat bed and catnip; all the things that might make up in a tiny way for his tragic life. But he didn't make it. He was put to sleep on October 18th, 1997. It was the kindest thing to do, he was suffering too much.
NOTE from Susie: If you aren't aware who Jana and/or these five Singapore cats are, I invite you to go to Cats' Voice in Singapore. And before leaving, meet our little Tigger and Missy, beloved playmates of Keiko's.
Born March 28, 1997 Became an AngelKitty June 4, 1997
Michael was born in a feral colony on March 28, 1997. I got him that day along with his brother Tristan. Tristan had to be put down immediately because he had a cleft palate. Michael thrived and was my only child for a few weeks. He was my first baby this year and somehow they are always special. I kept Michael, looking for the perfect home for him - finally thought I had found it, and with lots of tears kissed him goodbye on June 2 in the evening. When he left me he was a happy, healthy boy, acting like a typical Kitten, bouncing off the walls, jumping out from behind objects just to scare you.
Something went dreadfully wrong between Monday evening and Wednesday morning. Michael's new mom called me Thursday morning to tell me he had been listless on Wednesday morning and when she went home to check on him at lunch he was dead. I really can't understand what possibly was wrong. She claims her vet said it was an illness due to fleas. Sorry, but I'm not buying that one unless she has killer fleas in her house. Michael was bathed every single day of his life - he was a pure white boy, so one would have to be totally negligent in not finding any fleas on him. His new mom still has another of mine - Patrick. She says she wants to adopt another one, but I don't think so. I'm trying to figure out a way to catnap Patrick back...
NOTE from Susie: Please visit this lovely lady's page, a site dedicated to homeless cats, Safe Haven for Cats - her loving devotion in rescuing and helping cats and kittens is deeply moving and inspiring.
Pierre ~ Alicia Drnek
Born March 22, 1989 Became an AngelKitty April 11, 1992
I adopted Pierre when I first moved from my parents' house. He started this whole cat craze. A few weeks after I adopted him from 'Clara', she brought me a little kitten who had been hit by a car and left in a box to die. She asked me if I would foster him. It was doubtful that he would live, and if he did, his back leg would have to be amputated. He was badly dehydrated, had a shattered femur, wasn't eating, and the vets had done what they could. Meanwhile, he had to stay in a cage to prevent him from walking around.
At that time, I knew very little about cats and couldn't figure out why she brought him to me, but I agreed only to foster him, I wasn't interested in having another cat.
From the first night, Pierre took over the healing of this baby. Pierre never left his side; I had to move his litter pan and food dishes to that room. The vets actually called it a miracle that the little kitty made it, and his shattered femur was healing perfectly. It was no miracle, it was Pierre.
Of course, I kept this kitten. He was always very sickly, but Pierre let me know when it was serious, by meowing and hovering over the kitten. Pierre was never wrong. The two became inseparable, always in the same room, always taking care of each other. Pierre became a true big brother.
Eight years later, this kitten, is perfect. And his name is Baby Tugger.
Pierre died VERY suddenly at age three. The two were playing, and Pierre coughed and died. It was April 11, 1992 at 4:00 pm. No one could tell me why, although heart problems were suspected.
A few years later, I figured out the reason behind Pierre's short life. He was sent here for Tugger. He healed Tugger, and looked after him until he knew that Tugger would be safe with me. He was Tugger's guardian angel. I've even had a psychic tell me that Tugger was carrying two souls with him, and I know this second soul is Pierre's.
A few people, including myself, have seen a 'white spirit cat' in my house. Maybe Pierre is checking up on him. I'd like to think so. I know the story sounds a little bizarre, but it's what I have to believe to accept Pierre's leaving. When people ask me why I take in these foster cats, I tell them it's because of Pierre. What if Clara never took in Pierre and his litter mates? I would never have had this wonderful gift that changed my life. I want to give someone else a Pierre, like Clara gave to me.
Well, now, all this reminiscing has made me want to go hold my Tugger, so if you'll excuse me, I think I'll end.

FesterMan and Dogwoman ~ Tina Lassley
Born August 2, 1996 Became AngelKitties September 29, 1997
I will always remember them. They were the first kittens to be born under my care. I will always remember the way FesterMan would flop over when I petted him and Dogwoman would go after her Turbo. I hope that they are happy where the grass is always greener. My tears do fall, but I know I should not grieve for I will see them again.

If only you could have lived as long as my memories will. . .
If love could have saved, you would be with me still.
