Overseas Pet Quarantine Regulations for US Navy Personnel
The following information has been provided by a handout from the US Navy. If you're not US Navy, please contact your Personnel Office for countries pertaining to your branch of military service.
| Bahrain |
Bahrain has a one month quarantine for pets entering the country. Through a special arrangement with the Bahrain Ministry of Agriculture, military and embassy personnel can accomplish this quarantine at their home. Tell your sponsor to tell the Veterinarian and Personal Services Officer that you are bringing a pet. There are only three hotels where you can stay that allow pets in rooms. |
| Gitmo |
None |
| Guam |
Quarantine is required. All dogs and cats brought into Guam from other than rabies-free areas of Hawaii, Australia, and the British Isles must undergo a 120 day quarantine period at an approved animal quarantine facility. Cats and dogs being shipped through Hawaii may soon be able to see a reduction in the quarantine period. The Hawaii Board of Agriculture recently approved reducing the quarantine period to 30 days. The proposal is now awaiting the Governor's signature. |
| Hawaii |
30 days provided certain PRE-ARRIVAL REQUIREMENTS are met.
a. Two (2) rabies vaccinations given at least 6 months apart with the last vaccination given not less than 3 months and no more than 12 months prior to entry or re-entry into the State.
b. Serological test no less than 3 months and no more than 12 months prior to arrival in the State and a repeat test after arrival. The test results must be no less than 0.5 International Units. The serological test is known as the OIE Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralization (FAVN) test. The test is presently available at Kansas State University and the Department of Defense Laboratory and it is expected that by the time the proposed program is signed into law and implemented that test will be available in Hawaii.
c. Microchip identification issued by the State. FAVN test results listed above must be identified by this microchip number in order for the results to be considered valid.
d. Health Certificate written in English. |
| Italy |
There are no quarantine requirements for pet's incoming to Italy, however there may be quarantine requirements on the outgoing end depending on where you are transferring to. The NSA Veterinary Clinic will be able to answer your question on the quarantine of your pet. |
| Keflavik |
Very expensive and lengthy, (8 weeks), quarantine and veterinarian cost range from $1,000 to $5,500. Although efforts are being made to change the quarantine system, most pets are presently kept at a considerable distance from the base until they pass quarantine. Pre-approval is necessary before entry into country. |
| Okinawa |
Dogs and cats must have been immunized against rabies more than 30 days but less than one year prior to the date of entry into Japan. A health certificate must be done less than 10 days before entering Japan. Rabies Vaccination Certificate (DD Form 2208) and Health Certificate (DD Form 2209) issued by a military veterinary treatment facility are sufficient for entry into Japan. If either certificate is from a civilian veterinarian, the certificates must be endorsed and stamped by a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) field office.
If all certificates and vaccines comply with the above paragraph, dogs will be allowed a 14 day home quarantine with a follow up health check at the Kadena Veterinary Clinic. If the vaccines or certificates are not correct, the dog will go into absolute quarantine at the owner's expense for up to 180 days or until the paperwork is completed. |
| Puerto Rico |
There are no quarantines in Puerto Rico. However, your pet must have had a rabies shot within 30 days and you must be in receipt of a health certificate that is dated no earlier than 10 days before your pet's arrival. Certain pets are not allowed into Puerto Rico. Two of these are mongoose and ferrets. |
| Spain |
No quarantines in Spain. |
| Yokota |
Please be advised that effective 1 January 2000, the quarantine laws pertaining to dogs becomes applicable to cats.
Japanese Animal Quarantine Service Regulations require that all animals entering Japan be examined to determine if they are free from communicable diseases. Providing the correct paper work accompanies you and your pets arrival (see section on Pet Transportation), dogs may be released to owners for a 14 day in-home quarantine. Essentially, this means that you must keep your dog away from other pets for this period of time. All other pets may be released without quarantine. Animals found to be free from communicable diseases may be released to the owner's custody. If your pet's health certificate/rabies certificate does not have the raised USDA stamp, your pet must stay in the Pet Care Facility at your expense ($10.00 per day for dogs and $8.00 per day for cats) until this stamp is attained (one to two weeks) or until a possible 180 day quarantine with weekly check-ups is completed. |
